The author has essentially written the
shocking story of her ancestors who
lived in Andover, Massachusetts in
1692.  Her characters share their harsh,
Puritan way of life.  Two sisters, ages
10 and 12, are among the many women
accused of  practicing  witchcraft.
Under the Persimmon Tree, by Suzanne Fisher
Staples  (author of Shabanu) Grade 7 – up

As well as telling a really good story, the
author gives young adults insight into the
lives of people living in the mountains of
northern Afghanistan after 9/11.  This is the
story of a young girl’s journey to a refugee
camp in Pakistan after the Taliban kidnaps
her father and brother and American bombs
kill her mother.  
Drums Girls & Dangerous Pie, by
Jordan Sonnenblick    Grade 7 up

This is a bittersweet story of two
brothers, Steven, 13 yrs. old,  and
Jeffrey, 5 years old.  Steven thinks
typical middle school problems are
serious until his little brother is
diagnosed with leukemia;  he then
learns what's really critical.
